“An Incredible 1-On-1 Reading Teacher”

Trina Kandra with Great Strides is an incredible 1-on-1 Reading Teacher. She taught our 1st grader how to read and have confidence in her reading. She did this with such patience and made it fun to learn. Our child was always excited to learn with Trina!

“When A Kiddo Begs You to Continue A Reading Program…”

We used Great Strides for extra reading support for our kiddo, and he LOVED it. When we talked to him about stopping, he said, “NO WAY!”—so we continued! When a kiddo begs you to continue a reading program, you know it must be something special.

“10/10 Highly Recommend”

Great Strides has been an incredible asset to our family… When my son was starting kindergarten, he didn’t enjoy reading. He was struggling with letters and sounds, and practicing together was creating more of a struggle… In less than a year he was excelling not only in reading, but also in comprehension. His confidence has increased and he tells me regularly that “Teacher Trina is his favorite.”

Frequently Asked Questions.

Have questions? Check out our FAQs for quick answers and helpful information.

How do I know if my child needs intervention tutoring?

Here are some signs that your child may need extra support:

  • Difficulty recognizing letters and sounds
  • Trouble sounding out words
  • Slow or challenging reading
  • Guessing words from pictures or context
  • Avoiding reading and expressing dislike for it
  • (Strongly) Disliking schoolwork, specifically when it involves reading

Early detection and support can prevent frustration and build a strong foundation for success.

Even if your child is older, it’s never too late to improve their reading skills.

What are the benefits of Intervention Tutoring?

  • Reduced frustration and anxiety
  • Improved reading accuracy
  • Increased reading confidence
  • Stronger phonemic awareness
  • Better fluency
  • Greater Comprehension
  • Early detection of reading disabilities

What are the benefits of Enrichment Tutoring?

  • Enhanced reading comprehension
  • Expanded vocabulary
  • Increased knowledge in other subjects
  • Critical thinking development
  • Increased fluency
  • Greater love for reading
  • Articulate self-expression

How often should my child have tutoring sessions?

If your child is struggling, frustrated, or just starting to read, a minimum of 2 days per week is necessary to see progress. Immersion is the most effective way to build and reinforce reading skills. When my schedule and the family’s schedule allows it, I offer tutoring up to 5 days per week.

*Enrichment classes for students who perform at or above grade-level in literacy can be less frequent.

How long will my child need tutoring?

The duration of tutoring depends on your child’s specific needs and goals. Some students may reach their targets within a few months. Other students might benefit from continuous support. Every child learns at their own pace. I will assess progress and adjust as needed.

Do you help with homework?

I may occasionally review assignments with your child by request, but that is not my focus. Instead, I teach skills that will help your child master their curriculum and complete their work independently. My sessions are meant to build the essential literacy skills that equip your child with the tools they need to succeed rather than hammering out tasks.

How do I know if my child has a disability? Do you provide screenings?

There are certain patterns that may indicate that your child has a disability. I am able to screen for dyslexia if I notice that your child is struggling a lot. A screener helps me personalize my instruction. The screener may indicate that your child should get a formal evaluation. Your child’s school may require a diagnosis from a licensed psychologist in order to provide testing and other special education services. A diagnosis will open up a range of services, including when your child is in college. I also recommend it for homeschooled students.
